Family Fun

I had several questions on yesterday’s post about

The Big Nose!!

It’s amazing the things some people—no, let me back up—the things some kids will do for entertainment. Especially long ago and far away, before computer games and television.

Mr. D grew up in a rural area. Not a full‑blown farm, but close enough: a big garden, a milk cow, chickens, and five kids who had to invent their own fun because “entertainment” meant using your imagination.

Somewhere in all that country creativity, a strange family talent emerged. To this day, I have no idea how it started, but Mr. D and several of his siblings developed the uncanny ability to spread their nostrils. Not flare—spread. Each nostril moves like it has its own little brain. I’ve watched them do it a hundred times, and I still don’t understand the mechanics. I can’t do it. My nose just sits there, minding its own business.

Naturally, when our kids were little, Mr. D would break out “the big nose,” and the room would dissolve into giggles. And wouldn’t you know it—our kids eventually discovered they could do it too. Apparently it’s hereditary, like eye color or the inability to keep a straight face during family photos.

Honestly, it still makes me laugh. After all these years, that silly little trick has become one of those family legends that gets passed down like fine china—just a lot funnier and much easier to dust.

It’s one of those simple, ridiculous joys that has followed our family through the years, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

 Until Next Time

  2. That's funny.
He must be a 1950's kid...we all had to make our own fun and entertainment! My brother entertained us by wiggling his ears! We laughed so hard. Maybe kids today wouldn't think it funny but we roared.

  5. Love it! I can imagine how popular it would be with the kids. And for them to discover they can do it too? Well, that's perfection. :-)
    Blessings and hugs,

  6. Not halfway through and I'm giggling out loud! You're so right about having to create our entertainment "back in the day." Simple, funny pleasures!
