The Swing

Once upon a time there was a little girl that loved to swing.

The higher the better!  She always tried to get her toes to touch the clouds.

Somedays she would stand up to swing.  She could really go high when standing.

She would swing and sing...sing to the birds and sing to the trees.

And then there were times she would sit and twist the rope round and round ~ picking up her feet and letting go ~ she went spinning around like a top!

The swings were the social gathering place.  Girlfriend giggles and girlfriend secrets, all happened at the swings!

Sweet Memories

One day this little girl was assigned a poem to read in class.  The little girl loved the poem, it was about swinging!

The Swing
by Robert Louis Stevenson

How do you like to go up in a swing,
Up in the air so blue?
Oh, I do think it the pleasantest thing
Ever a child can do!

Up in the air and over the wall,
Till I can see so wide,
River and trees and cattle and all
Over the countryside--

Till I look down on the garden green,
Down on the roof so brown--
Up in the air I go flying again,
Up in the air and down!

Nervous and excited, she got through the entire poem without stumbling on one word.

 Happy Days!

That little girl is all grown up now, and if you haven't already guessed....that little girl is me!

Long Ago and Far Away

Trivia
~1~
The shirt I'm wearing in the picture was yellow, the scarf was mixed shades of blue and purple with white polka dots and yellow flowers along the edge.  My big brother Jeff gave it to me and it was one of my special treasures.  I loved that scarf, not only was it beautiful, it was a gift from Jeff!  It made me feel very special.

To this day, when I see a swing, I find myself reciting the first few lines of that poem, it's all I can remember!

Until Next Time
Let Jesus light your path.

  3. Hello again Sweet Mary. I love this poem too. My mother-in-law would sing it to my kids when we were together. I even have an audio of her singing it.

As a little girl, the swing was one of my favorite places. I always wanted to be a bird and swinging and climbing trees was as close to flying as I could get. Your post brought back all kinds of sweet memories!
