Memories to Remember

Family faces are like magic mirrors.
Looking at people who belong to us,
we see the past, present future.
Gail Lumet Buckley

When we were a young family there were many hectic moments.  Three daughter's getting ready for school, I'm trying to get ready for work and Rusty could just care less about the whole situation!  Mornings were doors slamming, doors being banged on, and me trying to calm the storm.  Four women, 2 bathrooms.....I couldn't wait to get to work so I could get some peace and quiet!

I remember frogs in the closet, love notes on the bathroom mirror written with toothpaste, turtles (many turtles) in the backyard and radios on the roof! I will never forget my two year old in the fridge throwing eggs on the floor, one egg at a time, and laughing like it was the most fun ever.

Like all families, we got through it and the 'hectic and door slamming' days are long gone.  What's left is that same loving family with memories that we never tire of remembering.

When I came across this little verse written by Erma Bombach I thought she'd been to our house and wrote about us...

We were a strange little band of characters, trudging through life sharing diseases and toothpaste, coveting one another's desserts, hiding shampoo, borrowing money, locking each other out of our rooms, (especially the bathrooms) inflicting pain and kissing to heal it in the same instant, loving, laughing, defending, and trying to figure out the common thread that bound us all together.

We found love to be our common thread, the glue that holds us all together.  The passing years have brought son-in-laws and grandchildren and the thread of love has just grown tighter and tighter.

Life is Good.

Until Next Time
Families give us many things ~ love and meaning, purpose and an opportunity to give and a sense of humor.

  3. Mary, this is such a lovely post. Oh, and I love that teapot with the red poppies. Every time I see poppies, especially the red ones, I think of the veterans. My father fought in WWII and sadly became a prisoner of war. He never talked to my mother or I about the sufferings he endured, but I know it must have been terrible. He died in 1984.

I love your posts, Mary, thank you so much for all you share here.

  5. Such a thoughtful post and one that expresses sentiments that many of us who experienced a shortage of bathrooms and an abundance of girls can relate to. I am a huge fan of all things Erma Bombeck...thanks for sharing her writing. Lovely photos, too.

  7. Came back to read again...

I think we begin to understand more and more as we remember days gone by, many holidays, toothpaste on the mirror (smile), and a million ordinary days, just how important these things are. Thank you for this, Mary. It was beautiful.

  8. If only, when we were young and going through all of the door slamming, etc., we could understand that truly these are precious times...times that will bring us precious memories in later life. :) Such a lovely post, Mary.
