Building Up or Tearing Down?

This is the sweetest little book...

Simple Joys of Girlfriends

So many stories to touch the heart.  Today I'm sharing one of my favorites.
Hope you enjoy!

Build Each Other Up
By: P H S

The hills of Scotland are dotted with piles of rocks called "cairns."  In ancient times, it's said, a cairn symbolized both friendship and enmity.  A man would begin a cairn with a small pile or rocks; then each friend who passed would add a rock while each enemy who passed would remove one.

Recently I was reminded of those cairns when I heard a friend complain that gossip was "tearing her down."  I realized then that each of us can add to or take away from another's cairn of life by..

..praise or criticism..

..attention or neglect..

..caring or contempt..

Consider how our language reflects this.  We speak not only of tearing someone down but also of building someone up.

Today, will you add to each life you meet, or will you take something away?  Will you be a friend ~ or a foe?  How will the cairns you pass look when you are gone?

Shorter or taller?

Encourage each other to build each other up, just as you are already doing.
1 Thessalonians 5:11 TLB

Really something to think about.  Do I help or do I hinder?

I entrust you to God and the message of his grace that is able to build you up and give you an inheritance with all those he has set apart for himself.
Acts 20:32 NLT

Well, I'm off to the doctor today.  Nothing to be concerned about, I'm thankful for that. Just something I never like to do!!

  1. God spoke to me about vanity and pride even before I got out of bed this morning. This post spoke to me about gossiping I did many years ago. I asked the lady to forgive me, and she did, but I still bear the weight (need to allow God to do that, right?) of things I said. :( So grateful for His correction, but more for His forgiveness.

  5. Thank you for these timely reminders. It is good to remember to think before we speak...something I often have difficulty with.
