Welcome to the first Monday of 2026!

How about resolutions?  Do you make them, and if you do, do you keep them?

I stopped making New Year’s resolutions some time ago. No matter how determined I was, I never seemed to keep them. I’d do just fine for a while and then… well, that’s a whole different story! Instead, I usually select a special word for the year, something to guide my heart and focus my thoughts. I’ve been giving this a lot of consideration, and once again I’m doing something a little different. This year, I’m choosing a hymn. There’s simply no better way for me to stay centered and on track than through a song.

Draw Me Nearer.
I am Thine, O Lord, I have heard Thy voice,
  And it told Thy love to me;
But I long to rise in the arms of faith,
  And be closer drawn to Thee.

Draw me nearer, nearer, blessed Lord,
  To the cross where Thou hast died;
Draw me nearer, nearer, nearer, blessed Lord,
    To Thy precious, bleeding side.

2

Consecrate me now to Thy service, Lord,
  By the pow’r of grace divine;
Let my soul look up with a steadfast hope,
  And my will be lost in Thine.

3

O the pure delight of a single hour
  That before Thy throne I spend,
When I kneel in prayer, and with Thee, my God,
  I commune as friend with friend!

4

There are depths of love that I yet may know
  Ere Thee face to face I see;
There are heights of joy that I yet may reach
  Ere I rest in peace with Thee.

 NEARER

I hope to:

Read It Everyday

Sing It Everyday

Study It Everyday

Pray It Everyday

Nearer is where I want to be.

  • James 4:8: "Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you."

  • Isaiah 41:10: "So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand."

  • Psalm 73:28: "But as for me, the nearness of God is my good; I have made the Lord God my refuge."

  • Hebrews 10:22: "Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith."

  • Psalm 145:18: "The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth."

It’s been rather quiet around here since Christmas. Mr. D has been settled in with the football playoffs, and I’ve been puttering around the house, enjoying a few small projects of my own.

We’re trying not to get out much these days. The flu is everywhere, and even though we’ve had our shots, it wouldn’t be wise for me to risk getting sick.

I started a new latch‑hook project, made it through several rows, and then set it aside. I wasn’t enjoying it the way I thought I would—maybe I’ll pick it back up later. So instead, I pulled out a new diamond art kit. It’s been several months since I last worked on one, and it felt good to get back into it. I even ordered a few new CDs from ChristianBooks to listen to while I work.

I realized I hadn’t been out on the back porch since well before Christmas, so I decided to enjoy my swing for a little while. The weather has been perfect for porch sitting—hard to believe it’s winter. {{sigh}} The plants, however, are definitely showing signs of neglect.

This is just one small area, the rest of the plants are the same.  Mr D and I need to get busy.

I was really amazed that my forgotten cactus was blooming.

And Life Goes On!

Until Next Time

  2. I love that hymn, and that makes a perfect "One Word" for the year. Draw Me Nearer, Precious Lord...Amen! I love that. I love that you were able to do a little porch sitting. I haven't been on ours in a while either. The weather has been a bit topsy turvy temperature wise, and then we did finally get some rain the other night and it was really gray, cloudy and misty/raw yesterday, so not a good day to go out, but we did go to church finally after missing 3 Sundays! It felt good to get back and see happy faces. There is a lot of flu still going around here as well, and although we are better, I sure don't want to get a relapse, so we are being careful. Oh, your Christmas Cactus is beautiful. Mine hasn't bloomed this year. And yes, it has been sorely neglected. Sometimes it surprises me, however, so I will have to look and see if there are any buds on it. I hope you have a lovely rest of your week ahead. Always good to start my MOnday with you and your Monday morning coffee talk!!

  3. Mary, I just love when you share the old hymns! They refresh my memory and I end up singing them throughout the day. So thank you :) I chose a scripture for my year - Psalm 131:1-2 - I have calmed and quieted my soul. It's exactly what I'm aspiring to this year - calm, quiet, and contentment.

  6. That is one of my favorite old hymns. Well, who am I kidding? Almost all of the old hymns are my favorites! I do want to draw nearer to Him every minute of every day.
    My project for the new year is a Christmas stocking for my new granddaughter, due in April. It will be a matching one to the ones I made her big sister "J" and her Mom and Dad. It's a knitted color work sock and that's not something I do often so it may take awhile. I also need to cross stitch her birth announcement. I like to have them all done so when they're born I just have to add the name, birthdate, weight and time.
    We have unusually warm weather here in the 40's. We are enjoying it. I only wore a light sweater when we went to renew our drivers licenses this morning.
    Blessings and hugs,
    Betsy

  7. That cactus is beautiful!
    Yours is one of my favorite hymns. I may not remember all the lyrics, but hum my way through those parts I forget -- with vigor and a smile in my heart. Great choice!

  8. Thank you for visiting my blog. It was a bit tricky to find yours because when I clicked on your name, it took me to a page that had your picture on it, but no links to your blog(s) so I Googled you, and this is where it took me. (Hope I've landed in the right place.)
    I feel so blessed to have found your blog. I've been scrolling through it, and everything I've read so far has been just what I needed to see/hear today. I think it was a Divine appointment.

  10. Your cactus is lovely! Staying in, away from potential germs is a good call. Lots of folks are getting some kind of virus down here and it hangs on for weeks. Doing my best to steer clear of sickness, too!! Take care!
