Clothesline Rules

THE BASIC RULES FOR CLOTHESLINES
(if you don't know what clotheslines are, better skip this)

You had to wash the clothes line before hanging any clothes- walk the entire lengths of each line with a damp cloth around the lines.

(I can see my momma now, cleaning that line.)

You had to hang the clothes in a certain order, and always hang "whites" with "whites," and hang them first. Longer, heavier things in the back. Shorter things in the front so the wind could blow through it all.

You never hung a shirt by the shoulders - always by the tail! What would the neighbors think? Pin lightly on the seams.

Wash day on a Monday! . . Never hang clothes on the weekend, or Sunday, for Heaven's sake!

Hang the sheets and towels on the outside lines so you could hide your "unmentionables" in the middle
(perverts & busybodies, y'know!)

It didn't matter if it was sub zero weather . ..
Clothes would "freeze-dry."

Always gather the clothes pins when taking down dry clothes! Pins left on the lines were "tacky!"

If you were efficient, you would line the clothes up so that each item did not need two clothes pins, but shared one of the clothes pins with the next washed item.

Clothes off the line before dinner time, neatly folded in the clothes basket, and ready to be ironed.

IRONED?! Well, that's a whole other subject!

I found these clothesline rules on the internet in several different places.  I tried to find the original author but alas, I failed.  I think it must have been a long lost sister of mine because this had to be written about my Momma!

hmm....or maybe it was written about your Momma!

Good Days, Happy Days!

Until Next Time

  2. I remember these "rules" from growing up. My momma still uses her clothes line. :)

  3. This makes me smile. My grandma taught me how to hang clothes properly. And I remember years ago a young couple moved next door. Clearly nobody taught her the rules. Grandma used to look out the window at her line and "tsk, tsk". Lol

  4. I am very familiar with the old cloths line and pins I used them until we move here in 64. Now do not have room. Your cloths smell so much fresher when dried outside. I am from the country and know all about hard times.
