Monday Morning Coffee Chat

Monday again and not much happening.

Not going to complain, I really enjoy the peace of a 'do-nothing' week.

We had some bad weather come through on Friday night and lost power about 6:30 in the evening...what do you do without power?  No TV, no internet, no radio, no A/C, can't read and no hot coffee.  I thought I was going to have to get out my old stovetop perculator.  Desperate people do desperate things!!

We decided to take a ride just to get out of the dark house....looking at the night lights around town was uplifting.  We talked about how people survived just fine before electricity came along and how spoiled we've become to 'new' technology.

BTW, we stopped for coffee while we were out!!

I finally fell asleep on the couch, the house was getting stuffy and I was so uncomfortable.  It was great when the servicemen woke me up around one in the morning.  They must have been having a party in the alley behind my house, yelling back and forth at each other and the motors of the big trucks purring in the background.  They got the job done and power was on by 2am.  Needless to say, Mr D and I were happy!

Our future granddaughter-in-law has returned from her mission trip to Haiti.  Here is what she posted on her facebook page...

Although I am back in the states, my heart is in Haiti. God has worked so many miracles over these past 10 days it is indescribable. God has showed me what pure happiness and love looks like. I loved Seeing the bright eyes and pure happiness of these children. It really is amazing how much love they have!

I can see her returning to Haiti again in the future.

From My Praise Journal

God has proven Himself as a faithful father.
Now it falls to us to be trusting children.

A new Whataburger is being built!  Exciting!!

Coffee Trivia:

It takes five years for a coffee tree to reach full maturity, coffee trees can live up to 100 years old
The average yield from one tree is the equivalent of one roasted pound of coffee.

On This Day:

1971 - In Prospect Creek Camp, Alaska the lowest temperature ever recorded in the U.S. was reported as minus 80 degrees.
brrrrr.....that's cold!!!

  2. I have a lot of candles and batteries for those times when I lose power. Losing the air (or heat in the winter) is the most bothersome. I'm glad you got out for a ride and some coffee. Wonderful to read the remarks from your future grand daughter-in-law and her trip to Haiti. Our church church directors went on a missions trip to Haiti last year and it changed their lives. They are planning on going every year now. Have a wonderful Monday!

  3. We did not lose power during yesterday's storms, thankfully. I am glad you two could get out and about and enjoyed a coffee! What a joyful photo of your granddaughter-in-law. Thank you for sharing about her trip. Wishing you a nice afternoon!

  4. Even in the dark, you and your hubby found joy (and coffee!)! That's what it is all about. If we can just find the joy in things every day, life will be so much better! Your posts always lift me up joyfully!! :)

  5. I always have candles nearby in the Winter, just in case. So far we have not had any power cuts. Glad you managed to get out to get a coffee!

  6. Hopeful that all the bad weather is over. There was a tornado a few miles from us but we only had winds thunder and lightening. God is Good! It takes a little inconvenience to make us thankful and grateful for what we enjoy every day.

  8. Hi Mary, we are getting more ice than snow with winds up to 50 miles an hour and I pray no power loss although they predict we might lose power. No coffee, no heat, no nothing as electricity controls my apartment.. Yucky!!! LOL! Not having a car and living in the country most of the area would be affected without electric. I'm happy to hear you were able to escape. What a blessing your future granddaughter-in-law is and what a wonderful ministry! Have a day of blessings my friend.

  9. We do so depend on electricity, and are lost without it. We were able to get a used generator for a good price so at least we can have lights and the furnace too. And coffee!!

  10. I am really late getting around to visiting blogs today. I just had a lot to accomplish and I knew if I sat down at the computer...well, I'd run out of day before I ran out of work! :-)

I am sorry to learn that you were without power over the weekend. I know from first hand experience that it isn't any fun. When Sandy went through here a few years ago we were without power for a week to the day! I kind of enjoyed it...life was lived at a much slower pace.

Good thinking to get some coffee while you were out riding around. ;)

I loved the picture of your future granddaughter-in-law with the children there in Haiti. It reminded me of the book Kisses from Katie.

A lovely post, as always, Mary.

  11. A delightful post Mary! It is amazing how quickly we realize the comforts we become accustomed to with electricity, and how thankful we are for the little things, like a cup of coffee! I love your old coffee percolator! We have a camp stove for such emergencies as power outages, and a generator too. Loss of power is an expected thing in the area we live in. How sweet that your granddaughter-in-law was so touched and moved by her experience in Haiti. Wonderful picture! We truly are so blessed here in ways we can't even number. Blessings and hugs to you today!
