Hello April

April Trivia:

April was formerly the second month in the ancient Roman year, when March began the calendar. The real origin of its name has been lost. The most common theory is that Aprilis is derived from the Latin verb Aperire, to open, as the opening, or blossoming, of trees and flowers.

April 1st was used to celebrate the birth of Christ up until 350 when Pope Julias I declared that Christ's birth would be celebrated on December 25th.

April always starts on the same day of the week as July.

April’s Full Moon is known as the Full Pink Moon because it heralded the appearance of wild ground phlox or moss pink, one of the first spring flowers. It is also known by many other names that announce the arrival of spring, including the Sprouting Grass Moon, the Egg Moon, and the Fish Moon.

How the origins of April Fools’ Day are uncertain, but many agree that it may have started in 1582, when France switched to the Gregorian calendar and moved New Year’s Day from March 25 back to January 1. Prior to this change, the New Year’s celebration had begun on March 25 and ended on April 1. Those who were unaware of the change were called April fools.

April is national kite month, when more than 700 kite events are expected to take place around the world. Legend has it that the first kite was flown centuries ago by a Chinese farmer who tied a string to his hat to keep it from going aloft.

Until Next Time

  2. Wow! I never knew so much about April before! Thank you!!! I just know that if we don't have some April showers really soon, there will be no May flowers. March was very hot and dry here in Florida...more like July! So we are praying that our spring will come back soon!!! I pray that April will be a time of joy and peace for all...and for our nation and world as well. Hold on, Easter is coming! Praise the Lord!!! The Tomb is empty!!!

  6. That was interesting. I didn't know about the change in the calendar, but I had heard Jonathan Cahn talk about how he believes Jesus was born in the spring when the lambs were being born near Bethlehem. Happy April 1 to you!

  7. Lots of interesting little bits of trivia. I didn't know that the birth of Jesus was once celebrated on April first. I'm kind of glad it was moved to the middle of winter when we need a reason to celebrate since we already have Easter around this time of the year.
