Memorial Day

 From a poem by Frederick W. Emerson:

Our Nation is reverently thinking today
Of the loved ones sleeping beneath the cold clay;
Of the sacrifice made, and the brave deeds done,
To preserve our Union as a glorious one.
We ne'er will be able to pay the great cost

Of the noble, the true, and the brave that we've lost;

But over their graves, with tears like the dew,
We'll lay our sweet flowers of red, white and blue.

Long ago and far away my Momma had a first cousin named Jack.  They were more like siblings than cousins because his mother helped raised her.  When WWII started my Momma and Daddy were living in Corpus Christi, Texas where Jack came for a visit before he was shipped out.  That was the last time Momma and Jack were together, he went down with his ship during the war, his body never recovered.

Momma was so thankful for that last visit, it was kept stored away in her heart, it was her precious memory.

Thank you Jack for the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.

You are still remembered.

With deepest gratitude for the ultimate sacrifice of our fallen heroes.

Until Next Time
God Bless the USA

  2. Hard to lose people especially in war. So awful, so senseless that nations fight. I think its great your mother saw him that final time. LOvely post Mary

  3. How welcoming your table setting looks! Your uncle's sacrifice sure underscores the importance of always parting on good terms; perhaps with an, "I love you." We never know that might be the last time we see someone.

  7. Beautiful poem, and wonderful post. Thank the Lord for men like Jack who were willing to go and fight for our country's freedom, even though it cost them their own lives. We owe them a debt that we cannot repay, except to make sure that we keep these freedoms intact and not allow any enemy, whether from without or within our nation, to take them away.
