Welcome to Saturday: 9.
Saturday 9: American Soldier (2003)
Unfamiliar with this week's song? Hear it HERE.
Memorial Day is a federal holiday that honors men and women who served and died in the United States Armed Forces. We want to make sure that message is not lost this weekend.
1) Are you a veteran? Are there veterans in your family? Do you know anyone who is active military? We are grateful and want to hear about it.
I am not a veteran; my younger brother is. He served several tours of duty in Viet Nam. It was ugly and he doesn't talk about it often. What he experienced it hard to hear anyway. My family was so thankful he wasn't physically wounded.
2) In this song, Toby Keith reminds us soldiers "work straight through holidays," even this one, and we are grateful for that, too. Have you ever had to work on a federal holiday? If yes, did it make you sad to be on the job when everyone else was celebrating?
I was a banker and banks always observe federal holidays, so my answer is no. Although, when ATM's first came into the world, they had to be maintained no matter what day it was. There was a group of us that took turns carrying a pager, when the machine needed us, we had to go.
3) The video for this song was filmed at Edwards Air Force Base. This site was chosen to make it easier for off-duty soldiers, reservists and their families to appear. Have you ever visited a military base?
I have, Ellington Air Force Base is very close by, and I've been there several times in years past. Mr D. played at the USO club a time or two, it was fun.
(For those who don't know, Mr D plays the guitar.)?
Have I ever mentioned that the first date I ever went on with him was to a jam session? Long ago and far away in 1961.
BTW: Ellington is no longer an active base; it's still used by the military for different things. The barracks have long since been gone and the USO club also.
4) Toby Keith never served in the military but often performed for the USO. While the USO is best known for providing entertainment to our troops, they also have a "Canine Comfort Crew." Local USO centers make dogs available to troops who long to see a wagging tail. Are you a dog lover?
I am a dog lover and I am missing my sweet Bitsy Baby and Buddy Boy who have crossed the Rainbow Bridge.
5) Memorial Day kicks off the summer season. What's your favorite picnic food?
I haven't been on a picnic in a very long time. My favorite picnic food is cold fried chicken.

When the chicken is cold! |
Life’s a picnic—full of ants, surprises, and sweet blessings. Pack laughter, grace, and a slice of faith, and you’ll always have enough to share.
6) Let's welcome summer with ice cream. What's your favorite flavor? Cone or cup?
I love Blue Bell Homemade Vanilla in a cup please♥
7) This marks the weekend when Americans step up their outdoor activity and do things they may not have been able to do during the winter months. For example, when is the last time you applied mosquito repellent?
I can't use repellent anymore because of my COPD. I can't sit outside too late in the evening, that's when those little rascals get hungry.
8) Or swam?
Once again, COPD and swimming don't go together, I never did a lot of swimming anyway, so it's not something I miss.
9) As you answer these questions, is there an air conditioner or fan on?
Both! A/C is always on and the ceiling fans are too, just the way I roll these days.

So thankful for the men and women who choose to serve in the military. A big THANK YOU to you hubby, fathers and grandsons♥ I love that you leave a Christmas tree up for them.
DeleteJust hearing the words "Viet Nam" still makes me incredibly sad; the way our returning veterans were treated so horribly. I understand what you mean by your brother wasn't PHYSICALLY wounded.
ReplyDeleteI didn't realize Bitsy and Buddy had made that crossing; I'm so sorry, Mary.
Thank you, I sure miss those little dogbabies. I agree with about VietNam veterans, they deserved better than that. Hope you're enjoy a blessed day.☺♥
DeleteBlessings to you, Mary. Viet Nam always stirs sad memories up for me. As for mosquitos, what about a natural bug repellent without aerosol?
ReplyDeleteI haven't tried a natural repellent, really haven't thought about it. Thanks for reminding there is such a thing. Blessing back to you, hope your day is happy and blessed☺♥
DeleteThose doggies were adorable. I’m so sorry they crossed the bridge.
ReplyDeleteThank you, and thanks for visiting today☺♥
DeleteMany people in our family have been in the military including my husband for 20 years.
ReplyDeletePlease tell I'm thankful for his service. ☺♥
DeleteMy dad was in WWII and his dad in WWI. I have friends who have served, but family. My husband and I just watched The Six Triple Eight. What an incredible movie. It absolutely breaks my heart to see the way those women - those soldiers - were treated. I'm especially grateful this year for the men and women who have served in the military over the years. I don't know why it seems more powerful to me this year, I'm just so humbled by their sacrifice.
ReplyDeleteWe certainly owe them all out gratitude.☺♥
DeleteThanks for stopping by my blog, Mary! I am a die-hard Texas Longhorn fan but if it is a Texas team, I will be cheering them on! I am in enemy territory(Oklahoma Sooners), these day, but I will never be anything but a Texas football fan! BTW-Amen on the cold fried chicken and the A/C!
ReplyDeleteGrace and Peace,
Pam

DeleteThe Viet Nam war cost my favorite uncle his health. There is little doubt that exposure to Agent Orange exacerbated the early-onset Parkinson's that killed him. I try not to be bitter about this, but I admit I don't often succeed. So thank you for posting the pix of Bitsy Baby and Buddy Boy. What wonderful faces!
ReplyDeleteSo sorry about your uncle, war is so terrible. My dogbabies were precious, Bitsy passed in her sleep at the age of 14 and Buddy had a tumor, although benign it would not stop growing. Thanks for visiting♥
DeleteMy Dad served in WWII. My brother at the beginning of Vietnam. My brother-in-law and hubby at the end of Vietnam. We were and are a very patriotic family who love our country and the men and women who have served in the military. We owe them all so much, especially those that didn't come home.
ReplyDeleteWe've already been camping once this year and have three more trips planned so far. To Kentucky for 2 weeks the first part of June, the Black Hills of S. Dakota for a week with our granddaughter the last week of June and to Montana, Washington and Oregon for a Month in July and August. We'll be going from one end of the country to the other! I'm looking forward to it.
I love, love, love ice cream, epecially if it has chocolate in it. Any form or combination of chocolate, nuts, peanut butter, etc.
I hope you're having a lovely Sunday.
Blessings and hugs,
Betsy
