A Little Something for Saturday

I was so delighted that Luby's was open yesterday!

They had black eyed peas, cabbage and cornbread, we didn't hesitate to call in an order for take out.

It was nice to enjoy our New Year's meal at home, around our own table.  Rusty was here and joined us, we enjoyed his company.

Our sweet Hazel is growing, she's 3mos old now, smiling and turning over.

I love her bows, they make me laugh.  They're as big as she is!

Here's some trivia!

Did you know?

Answer. No.
Black-eyed peas (Vigna unguiculata) are a variety of the cowpea and are part of the family of beans & peas (Leguminosae or Fabaceae in the USA). Although called a pea, it is actually a bean.

A pea is a bean!

Is cabbage really cabbage? 😀

•Because cabbage requires only three months of growing time, one acre of cabbage will yield more edible vegetables than any other plant.

•The world's largest cabbage is credited to William Collingwood of County Durham, England, whose prized cabbage in 1865 weighed in at 123 pounds.

•Cabbage is considered Russia's national food. Russians eat about seven times as much cabbage as the average North American.

Do you like cabbage?  I do, I like to stir fry it with bacon and onions or make a good slaw.

Until Next Time

  2. Oh my Hazel is just so cute! I guess the big bows are the latest baby fashion. My daughter did not like anything on her head. I do like cabbage. I like to add it to soups. I have tried black eyes peas and cabbage and liked them. Happy New Year!

  3. I just love Hazel, smiles. Always makes my day to see her photo, grin. Have a beautiful day friend...and I like my cabbage the same way you do and I also like my late grandmas Sarma (cabbage rolls). I love your home, Mary.

  4. Hazel is adorable! And that bow...just too sweet! Your kitchen looks like it was a lovely bright and cozy place to enjoy your New Year's meal together. I've never had a black-eyed pea (or bean) in my life. I do love cabbage, though, pretty much any way you can fix it. I'm wanting to try the roasted cabbage "steaks" I saw on Pinterest one of these days. Happy New Year to you and your family!

  5. We had black eyed peas cooked in the "hopping john" recipe, over rice. We also had ham and pulled pork and other good stuff. I love cooked cabbage and slaw. I may just go cook some with the left over ham. Happy you had your son there to enjoy New Year's Day with. And Hazel Kay is adorable. Have you been able to hold her yet? She is so cute, and I love that big red bow! What a charmer she is!! Your kitchen looks so welcoming. I want to come have a cup of tea with you someday!! Happy New Year!

  6. I can't get enough of Hazel Kay's sweet expressions. How blessed, having such a happy baby! Your dinner sounds SO good. Because hubby flat-out refuses to taste black-eyed peas/beans I just heated up a can for my breakfast and called it 'good.'

  7. Hello Mary, May we all have a much better year. Your lil miss is darling. Babies sure add so much joy to our lives. I had black eyed peas on new year's eve and new year's day! Yummers. I didn't know about the cabbage. That's interesting. I like cabbage. I don't eat it very often, but sure like it. May 2021 a great year.
    God bless,

  8. Your adorable Hazel just needs to be cuddled and kissed on those cute cheeks!! That bow really is almost as big as she is!! Joe and I both love cabbage. I stir-fry it with smoked sausage and onion (with lots of butter). So good!! I have a cabbage in the fridge right now, fresh from a friend's garden. Wishing you a good weekend and week ahead!

  9. My Mom was born in Russia and came to Canada as a young girl. She made a lot of different foods with cabbage...Borscht, Cabbage rolls, and something with an unpronounceable name that involved cabbage, raisins, sugar and vinegar. Us kids were not thrilled with that one.
